Chronicles the life of Gandhi beginning with his political activities in South Africa during the late 1890's and ending with his assassination at the hands of a Hindu extremist in 1948. Shows the development of his philosophy of non-violence as he leads the people of India to independence from the British.

Set in the Pakistani community in south London, the film focuses on two youths--Johnny, a working-class white, and Omar, a Pakistani. Together they operate a laundrette, which Omar inherits from his uncle. While Johnny looks upon the laundrette as a life line on which to salvage his self-respect, Omar sees it as just the beginning step on the road to riches.

An uncommon love story that takes place between a young South London Pakistani man (Gordon Warnecke), who decides to open an upscale laundromat to make his family proud, and his childhood friend, a skinhead (Daniel Day-Lewis), who volunteers to help make his dream a reality. This culture-clash comedy is also a subversive work of social realism, which dares to address racism, homophobia, and sociopolitical marginalization in Margaret Thatcher's England....
